Armistice Day
On Armistice Day (11/11/1918), at 9am the Battery received the following orders:-
“Hostilities temporarily cease at 11.00 today when all offensive action will cease. Present outpost line to be maintained and no troops of the Division to pass it. No conversation with the enemy will be allowed.”
The men had just finished loading up all their ammunition. Lt J Lee recalled:-
“The Battery CO, Major C.R. Morris-Eyton said “I’ll be damned if I’m going to cart that lot around” so he put the Battery on gun drill and fired the lot off into a wood about 500 yards away. A wonderful way to end the war, but I don’t know what would have happened if it had started up again”.
