Nicholson War Memorial
Dedicated to the fallen of Leek
Samuel Birch Vigrass AOC A/Sgt 022748
According to family history Sam returned home from France on the back of a cattle wagon in the rain. He had pneumonia and died in December 2018. His name is on the monument. I think he lived in Shirburn Road Leek with his wife Ethel who died shortly after him . She was buried with him in Leek cemetary in her wedding dress.
According to Chris Sheldon’s book he went to West Street School and worked as a cashier at Wardle and Davenport’s. Ethel used to live at Little Birchall Farm and they bought the house together in Shirburn Road.
