Restoration

The Friends are especially grateful to the National Lottery Heritage Fund for their £178,000 grant to help renovate the memorial and undertake structural restoration of the metalwork inside the memorial.

We are also especially grateful to Cllr John Povey (past Chairman of the Friends) and Julie Taylor (Town Clerk) for their hard work and devotion in preparing the lottery submission in order to secure the Heritage Lottery grant.

“It was a privilege to visit the Monument on the 1st July 2011 while restoration works were under way. The access the scaffold gives lets you appreciate the skill of the team who built it in 1925 and the amount of detail there is on the building. I am delighted with the medal boards that have been placed on the site boundary and would like to pass on my thanks to all those who have helped to make this community installation possible.” – Cllr John Povey, Project Manager, Heritage Lottery Bid & Restoration.
